the lord's prayer

Latin: Oratio Dominica or Pater Noster

Shorter Version: Luke 11:2-4

Longer Version: Matthew 6:9-13

Encyclopedia Britannica--Lord's Prayer: ". . .prayer taught by Jesus to His disciples, and the principle prayer used by all Christians in common worship.

"The Lord's Prayer resembles other prayers that come out of the Jewish matrix of Jesus' time and contains three common Jewish elements: praise, petition and a yearning for the common Kingdom of God. It consists of an introductory address and seven petitions. . . .

"Biblical scholars disagree about Jesus' meaning in the Lord's Prayer. Some view it as "existential," referring to man's present experience on earth, while others interpret it as eschatological, referring to the coming Kingdom of God. The prayer lends itself to both interpretations, and further questions are posed by the existence of other translations and the problems inherent in the process of translation. In the case of the term daily bread for example, the Greek word "epiousion" which modifies "bread" has no known parallels in Greek writing and may have meant "for tomorrow." The petition "Give us this day our daily bread" may thus be given the eschatological interpretation "Give us today a foretaste of the heavenly banquet to come." This interpretation is supported by Ethiopic versions and by St. Jerome's reference to the reading "bread of the future" in the lost Gospel According to the Hebrews. The eschatological interpretation suggests that the Lord's Prayer may have been used in a eucharistic setting in the early church."

We present this foundational prayer in NUMEROUS different versions to give you a more HOLISTIC perspective.

TRADITIONAL MATTHEAN VERSION
Roman Catholic Bibles

Our Father who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be thy name;
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.

Hallowed be thy name;

Forever.

Our Father in Heaven,
Hallowed be your Name,
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done,
On earth as in Heaven.

Now and forever.

TRANSLATION FROM THE ARAMAIC PESHITTA TEXTS
by George M. Lamsa from the Lamsa Holy Bible

Matthew 6:9-13 in the Lamsa Holy Bible

Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done,
As in heaven, so on earth.
Give us bread for our needs from day to day.
And forgive us our offences,
As we have forgiven our offenders.
And do not let us enter into temptation,
But deliver us from evil (wrong, wickedness, error).
For thine is the kingdom
And the power
And the glory
For ever and ever.
Amen.

THE ARAMAIC PRAYER OF JESUS
as translated from Aramaic in 'Prayers of the Cosmos' by Saadi Neil Douglas-Klotz

O, Birther of the Cosmos, focus your light within us -- make it useful
Create your reign of unity now
Your one desire then acts with ours,
As in all light,
So in all forms,
Grant us what we need each day in bread and insight:
Loose the cords of mistakes binding us,
As we release the strands we hold of other's guilt.
Don't let surface things delude us,
But free us from what holds us back.
From you is born all ruling will,
The power and the life to do,
The song that beautifies all,
From age to age it renews.
I affirm this with my whole being.

INTRO TO A NEW CONSCIOUSNESS TRANSLATION
by Rev. Simeon Nartoomid

I have written the following version of the Lord's Prayer from my inner gnosis after having contemplated the other available translations over some considerable amount of time. The problems which are inherent in translations from one language to another, the differences in the people and culture of Jesus' time from our current society and the way in which they would have understood certain sayings and words, and the fact that perhaps at least 40 years may have elapsed before the prayer Jesus taught His disciples had been recorded in written form, all suggest that the thought-forms and feelings which He had originally placed in the prayer may have been somewhat lost or altered, even in the original versions before translation. As I deeply contemplated upon this prayer over time, I continually asked for divine assistance in coming to a place of inner gnosis whereby I might FEEL this prayer as Jesus had intended for it to be felt. I believe I have now experienced the Lord's Prayer in that way.

I have chosen words which in my own vernacular seem to best invoke those feelings, while at the same time trying to keep to the general overall understanding imparted by the traditional translations. Hope this is of help to those of you who for whatever reason may have difficulty accessing the deeper feeling of the Lord's Prayer through the more traditional translations and versions of it. I have found that once I got the feeling of the Lord's Prayer through my own version of it, it then was possible to join in with others in more traditional versions and get the same feeling. The inability to gain that feeling initially through the more traditional versions of the prayer may well have been only my own personal problem, but I do believe if it was a problem for me, then it may well also be for others.

A NEW CONSCIOUSNESS LORD'S PRAYER
by Rev. Simeon Nartoomid

Oh beloved Father aspect of All Creation
Who resides in the eternal cosmos
And Who art present in all things
And all levels of creation.

May Thy name always be held sacred
Within our hearts, our minds and our souls,
And all of the earth.

May Thy Kingdom reign
Upon the Mother earth
As it is in the heavens
Through our attunement to Thy Will.

May we be open enough to receive the sustenance of
Thy eternal life every day henceforth,
Which ensures our daily bread upon the earth.

And may we be open to Thy all-loving Grace
Which cleanses us of all imbalances and impurities,
As we also open ourselves to be a channel of
Thy all-loving Grace for others.

And may our attunement to Thee keep us
From straying from Thy Kingdom,
And deliver us from any illusions
Of our separation from Thee which spawn darkness.

For we recognize that the only true power,
Glory and kingdom is Yours
And can manifest within us,
And our world,
And is eternal.
Amen.

A NEW CONSCIOUSNESS LORD'S PRAYER
as given by Jesus to Glenda Green in the book: "Love Without End: Jesus Speaks"

Our Father who is innocent and pure,
Holy is your name.

May love be seen as all that it is.

May earth be seen as heaven is.

Nourish this day with your bountiful supply,
And allow us to receive as
we give that right to others.

Restore us from the perils of illusion,
And renew our perception of truth.

For truth is the kingdom,
and love is the power,
and Yours is the glory forever.

A NEW CONSCIOUSNESS LORD'S PRAYER
as given through Veronika Wilcox of the Healing Circle of Light

Our Father which art divine consciousness.
Thou art the one I AM, this is Your holy Name.

Thou art all-Presence and Thy Will is One.
Thou art the great Provider, our Source.

Forgiveness is to remember that all is one in Love.
Thou leadest us for Thou art the Light in us.

Thy Kingdom is Truth.
Thy Power is Love.
Thy Glory is Life eternal.

Amen.

A NEW CONSCIOUSNESS LORD'S PRAYER
as given through photographer and pilot David Muldoon of Dubai
David Muldoon Photography and From Shutter to Canvas

Oh Heavenly Father.
We are at one with YOU here on Earth,
As we are in Heaven.
Our name is One, for I am YOU and YOU are ME.

Thank you for the path YOU have laid before US,
For it leads only to YOU.
We may stray off that path,
But we cannot fail to reach YOU.

Thank you for understanding OUR human emotions,
As We endeavor to understand them in others.

With each passing day,
We seek and find YOUR Love... for,
YOUR love is Pure.
YOUR love is Bountiful.
YOUR love is Everlasting.

YOUR love fills the Universe,
and will sustain Us forever and ever.

Amen.
